What is Prayer?
By Jim Odom
What is Prayer? In order to have a discussion, I think it is first important to define prayer. Here is a common definition: an address (as a petition) to God in word or thought. To paraphrase, a prayer is to speak to God. Is there really a God? If a person is to pray; and if the definition of prayer is to speak to God, then we must first believe there is a God. Personally, I think it is quite obvious that there is a God. Look at a beautiful building or marvel at how complex are the parts of a computer. I would be hard pressed to convince any rational thinking person that this building or this computer happened by accident. I have a theory that there was an explosion in a metal factory and afterward, computers rained from the sky. This skyscraper was built without an architect or ANY plans. If I held to those theories, I would be ridiculed. And yet seemingly intelligent men have proposed just such theories for how man was created...No God...No Plan...Just a big BANG. And worse, those "intelligent men" ridicule those who would dare to believe in intelligent design. How do we dare speak to a being so mighty? If you are a Christian, and I am, then you will find the answer in Jesus. He came to earth to show how much the Father loves us and wants to be our daddy (Abba in the Greek). Jesus prayed many times. Once in the Garden he even asked if this plan had to go forward. He prayed for others and GAVE. The answer is that we speak to God like he is our best friend. Tell him your innermost secrets. Don't always just be asking something from him. You wouldn't like to have a friend who was always taking and never giving. Don't make your prayers like that either. Be a friend to God...He will be a friend to you.

I heard about a dyslexic agnostic who was an insomniac...He laid awake at night wondering if there really is a doG

Thanks, it's good to see there are still some sane people left in the world
Perfectly explained! A prayer indeed is just a conversation to the best friend and best listener one will ever have. Thank you for this article!

The hardest part is listening for His answer.
Thank you for sharing, Jim. We all need someone to share our thoughts and feelings. Best wishes. Federick

Yes and when you try to share your feelings with your friends, they can't wait to start gossiping. Either that, or they are glad to hear someone else has a problem (makes them feel better)
Thanks for handling this topic in such an easy going way. There was a movie about an Italian priest, about 50 years ago. He had the most unusual way to treat Jesus like a friend. What made it so hilarious was that Jesus never talked back. But the priest often pretended that he did. Perhaps some of you will remember the priest's name.
