God Grew Tired of Us
By Jim Odom
I have a special interest in films and information about the homeless in Africa. I have a grandson that is 9 years old. My daughter and I made two trips to Ethiopia and spent a total of about three weeks there before we brought him to America. We in America can't begin to relate to a life so hard and a future so bleak, that mothers will abandon their babies in hope of a better life for them. The Title of this Post The title of this post is a result of having watched a film/documentary by the same name. The title comes from an interview with one of the “Lost Boys”. As he is interviewed, he remarks about how difficult it was for him to bury the dead who didn't make it to the refugee camp. During the interview he makes the statement that God grew tired of us. I'm sure we have all thought from time to time that God has abandoned us or “Grew Tired of Us”. For most of us, even our bleakest of times do not come close to the hardships faced by these children. The Film The film, ‘God Grew Tired of Us’ traces the trail of refugees (most of them under 13) fleeing war and poverty from war ravaged Sudan. Narrated by Nicole Kidman, the film follows closely the predicament of Daniel Abol Pach, Panther Bior, and John Bul Dau. They are the movie’s central characters. They are offered visas to the United States and given aid by a Catholic Relief agency. The aid consists of three months free room and food while they became acclimated to America. What makes ‘God Grew Tired of Us’ so wonderful is that it traces the lives of these boys from the time they left Sudan. It also chronicles their first five years of life in America. The filmmakers use footage of the aftermath of the civil war between northern Muslim Arabs and the southern Christians as a backdrop for the beginning of the film. We watch as we see 27,000 refugees fleeing to Kenya through Ethiopia. They trek barefooted across barren dessert, emaciated figures, burying their dead along the way. It is a miracle that only about ten thousand of the children perish before they reach a refugee camp in Northern Kenya. The Lost Boys Acclimating to America It's heartwarming to watch as they learn how to use a shower, turn on electric lights, and go shopping in a supermarket for the first time. I enjoyed seeing them learn about, and sample sprinkles on a donut for the first time. They wondered aloud about how Santa Clause came to be a part of the Christmas story. I thought I was going to be able to watch the entire film without crying. I almost made it too. The sight of one of the boys being reunited with his mother was enough to make me “lose it” though. He hadn't seen her in 18 years and had thought her to be dead. The tears of joy and the rejoicing when they finally met, was a fitting ending to the film. We Can Help Just in case you are moved to help like I was, I have provided a link at the end of this post. You can go on line and make arrangements to have an amount processed to your credit card each month to help. The orphanage that I have the link for below is called AHOPE. It is an orphanage in Ethiopia that cares for only children who have HIV. I have personally visited and seen first hand the care and love they show the children while they await placement in loving homes. I hope you will share from your abundance

I got it on line through Netflix. It's such a specialty, I doubt it being available in most DVD rental venues.
Thanks for sharing.
It's truly a wonderful thing that you and your daughter did. Not enough of us have that "special something" that would motivate us to do what you did.

She is the one that has that "special something". I got to accompany her on the trip and now I get to spoil my grandson. She gets to experience the joy I did in raising her.
Thank you for sharing such a touching act and much helpful information with us.
Thanks for sharing that great story Jim. Blessings to you (and your daughter and grandson too)
