A Good workaround for the ANY Key

By Jim Odom

I am sure you have had the same problem that I have had from time to time. I can't find the "Any" key on my keyboard! There have been several times that I would get a message that would say, "press any key to continue". Well, I was stumped. Most common keyboards that I have used, do not have an "Any" key. I'm not sure if they have quit making those keyboards or if I have just not shopped for them at the higher end computer stores.

True Story

I was discussing a computer issue with one of my employees. I was walking her through the process of solving the issue over the phone. I told her that first thing she needed to do was make sure all the windows were closed. She put me on hold and was gone for quite a while. When she got back on the phone, she said, "Jim, I've looked all over the gallery and there are not any windows. I didn't think there were but I closed the door to the stock room." This just goes to show how dumb some people can be. I had to explain that it was probably her car window that had been left open.

But seriously, getting back to that "Any" key

I have found a swiggly line that I practically never use on the keyboard. It is just to the left of the numeral one and you have to use the shift key to get to it. It looks like this: "~". I have no idea why you would ever use it.

I decided to put that key to use. Here is what you can do too: Just simply type the word, "Any" on a piece of typing paper. Next carefully cut out those letters to be about the size of the top of one of your keyboard keys. (If it's too large, use a smaller font and start over)

Next use a good glue (airplane glue works best) and glue the small piece of paper over that keyboard key with the swiggly line. Wallah, you now have an "Any" key on your keyboard.

In order to make sure that the "Any" key is working properly, you will need to re-boot the computer

Don't kick it too hard though, I damaged mine once like that

Contributor's Note

My staff can tell that I have been using the computer when they have to clean the white-out off the screen.

Thanks for your contribution. I was able to go back and edit. Am I required to give credit somehow?

I love it. One of my websites is AnyKeyGraphics.net

It includes lots of free images you can use including a picture of the legendary "Any Key" that I created in paint.

What size boots do you recommend for rebooting my computer?

Now you're just being silly. Anyone would know that the size of the boots you are wearing would have no relation to booting your computer. I hate to give credit to someone like you who is obviously so il-informed, but I will upload a picture of your "Any Key"

Thanks for sharing

I knew an apprentice that was sent to the plumbing store in search of a long weight, he got one!

Is that anything like a left-handed wrench?

I was told of a complaint department headed by Helen Wate. Anyone who had a complaint was told to go to Helen Wate!

When I was in the real estate business, I ordered a quantity of double sided signs that had a directional arrow at the bottom. They were all stacked against one side of the room and I commented that I would have to send half of them back because they all pointed the same direction. It wasn't difficult to get a Realtor to believe me!!

Jim, you really should take time out from your busy schedule to write, because you are a very good writer!

I guess all the keys on my keyboards are "any" keys now because the lettering has long been worn off most of them. Being a touch typist, however, I don't much need the letters anyway.

But in addition to the typing, I also put myself through graduate school repairing computers, and yes, in one case I drove thirty odd miles to a client's office, only to find that the AC cord on his computer was not plugged in. Apparently, neither was his brain.

I don't see haw ANYONE could possibly type without letters on the keys

I don't know at the times a loose connection on a USB cable has been the culprit

As a very junior clerk in a bank I was asked to get some green oil for a starboard light when I went to the post office. Being very timid in my first weeks I didn't argue. I asked the PO clerk if he could think of a good reply. When I returned to the bank clerk I said "They don't sell oil. But I should ask you to keep an eye out for a left handed screw driver to go with the left handed hammer set that he already had."

I did some plumbing and was asked to get a pipe stretcher out of the truck

LOL. That's funny.

I heard a story once about a lady complaining to a computer tech (on a phone help desk) that the "drink tray" on her computer was broken. The tech was naturally somewhat perplexed. He eventually figured out that she was referring to the CD loading tray.

A tilde (~) is often used to indicate "approximately". I've also heard that on a computer keyboard, it has been used as part of a code to get to a specific program or part of a program. Why THAT key? Like I should know? I am not a techy -- just a normal, slightly better than ignorant user...

Merriam-Webster Online definition:
Main Entry: til·de
Pronunciation: \ˈtil-də\
Function: noun
Etymology: Spanish, from Medieval Latin titulus tittle
Date: circa 1864

1 : a mark ˜ placed especially over the letter n (as in Spanish señor sir) to denote the sound \nʸ\ or over vowels (as in Portuguese irmã sister) to indicate nasality
2 a : the mark ∼ used to indicate negation in logic and the geometric relation “is similar to” in mathematics b : the mark ∼ used to indicate an approximate value

I still prefer: Squiggly line
I found nothing in the Thesaurus
But then, what's another word for Thesaurus
(that's a whole other Intel)

LOL... I enjoyed all the funny stories in this intel and the comments. Judging from responses you received it appears to me there are quite a few people around who appreciate you taking some time for writing... :)

I wouldn't mind taking some time writing if I knew how to type. Two finger typing with an occasional thumb on the space bar makes for a slowly written article. I don't usually take the time unless it's something VERY important like sharing how to add the "Any" key to your keyboard.

Fair enough, Jim... LOL

I was on a construction site where a young apprentice was sent into town on his bike to get a left-handed screwdriver. They love to screw the young guys around. Might work on a computer, though?

They don't make left handed screwdrivers in New Zealand????

What a great article!!! Anyone wanting a good laugh should read it and all the comments. Some good ones!

Thanks Jim and all you wonderful funny Qondio members.
